Belgian road vignette 2027: legally vulnerable if Belgians are compensated in net terms
Belgium wants to introduce a digital road vignette for passenger cars and other vehicles up to 3.5 tons on regional roads and motorways from May 1, 2027. Formally, the plan applies to everyone: Belgians and foreigners. Legally, things only get exciting when it comes to compensation. If Belgian car owners receive a net refund of the vignette through a reduction in their road tax, while Dutch and other foreigners receive nothing in return, the plan comes close to the German toll case that the EU Court banned in 2019.
